Happy May Day!

Good morning Wildcat Artists - May Day is a public holiday usually celebrated on the 1st of May. It is an ancient festival of Spring. Festivities include dances, singing, cake and MAYPOLES - color theory in playful action!

A Maypole is a tall wooden pole erected as a part of various European folk festivals, around which a maypole dance often takes place. Maypole dancing is a tradition on May Day. It is believed to have started in Roman Britain around 2,000 years ago, when soldiers celebrated the arrival of spring by dancing around decorated trees thanking their goddess Flora as a sign that the happy season of warmth and comfort had returned.

Although we cannot be together to weave our own colorful Maypole creating a sculptural color wheel (please send picture if you create one yourself) I want to share with you a vibrant treat for your eyes and imagination today - always find ways to apply and appreciate your Color Theory + Color Wheel knowledge!

TAUBA AUERBACH’S RGB COLORSPACE ATLAS
A Cubed Book that Depicts Every Color Imaginable

RGB Colorspace Atlas is a collection of 8 x 8 x 8-inch case bound books that present viewers with the RGB (red, green, blue) color model. The model is defined by electronic systems such as computer and television screens, video cameras, and scanners, as well as digital photography, and the theory originates from basic human perceptions of color. Each volume contains 3632 pages and represents a look through the color scheme of each of the three different color channels; Red, Green and Blue = RGB.
Picture
An RGB image has three channels: red, green, and blue. RGB channels roughly follow the color receptors in the human eye and are used in computer displays and image scanners.

The RGB color model is an additive color model in which red, green, and blue light are added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colors. The name of the model comes from the initials of the three additive primary colors, red, green, and blue.
Picture
Projection of primary color lights on a white screen shows secondary colors where two overlap; the combination of all three of red, green, and blue in equal intensities makes white.
Picture
Additive color mixing: adding red to green yields yellow; adding green to blue yields cyan; adding blue to red yields magenta; adding all three primary colors together yields white.
The main purpose of the RGB color model is for the sensing, representation, and display of images in electronic systems, such as televisions and computers, though it has also been used in conventional photography. Before the electronic age, the RGB color model already had a solid theory behind it, based in human perception of colors.

The collection is a tangible rainbow of colors in the color spectrum. As viewers flip through each volume, gradients of color are visible on the pages. Each book demonstrates a different RGB scheme where hues and shades blend together to form various vibrant color palettes.

THE RGB CUBE: 16777216 COLORS IN 30 SECONDS

A GORGEOUS CUBE OF MANY COLORS

The RGB Colorspace Atlas by New York-based artist Tauba Auerbach is a massive tome containing digital offset prints of every variation of RGB color possible. For you designers, think of it as a three-dimensional version of a Photoshop color picker.

American artist Auerbach presents the 8 x 8 x 8-inch hard-back cubes illustrating the color spectrum through digital offset print in a page-by-page medium. A digital offset print on paper with airbrushed cloth cover and book edges create a colorful reference volume of all the colors in (known) existence.

The special binding was co-designed by the artist herself in collaboration with Daniel E. Kelm and were printed at his Wide Awake Garage studio, an independent bookbinder, with assistance from Leah Hughes.

What a beautiful sculptural object!

FLIPPING THROUGH A BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW BOOK

New York-based artist Tauba Auerbach dabbles in a little bit of everything, including painting, photography, book design, and musical performance. Her artwork challenges the expected norms and examines the systems that define our world. She says her work is an attempt to reveal “new spectral and dimensional richness…both within and beyond the limits of perception.”
